Indeterminada

4. Os iré contando.

My thyroid has developed nodes of a considerable size, a common fact in women of a certain age. Inflammation affects specially one of those nodes when I am under stress or exhaustion, and my doctor has added to the treatment some tests to check if the cells are benign or malign.Ok. The cells in my node are “indeterminate”. It makes me laugh, they are trendy too and declare themselves “non binary”. No, really, the test can’t determine if they’re good or bad, I must wait and repeat it in two months time. This has opened very interesting spaces. 1. I am currently, and during November, on tour with a danced lecture. In it Fernando López and me scream at the top of our lungs that we “are Everything and are Nothing”. In this danced lecture, “Y Después?”, I also recite the list of mi “identities” (mestiza, North American, bisexual, bailaora…), only to highlight others seemingly opposite but actually complementary (Rroma, Spanish, lesbian, bailarina…). The Universe smiles and confirms: my cells are still alive while they refuse to define as something or the other, and have not self destroyed. At least not yet. 2. Going from one test to the other, I observed my dear ones reactions to this information. The concept “indeterminate”, related here to health, is not understood, is hard to take in, is uncomfortable, frightening, some even would prefer “malign” instead. They want me healthy, and I thank them, I want me healthy too. But I’m surprised by how difficult it is for them to position at the “undefined” spot. They all think or want to think the cells are benign. 3. And me? I choose the blank paper, the void, the middle. I don’t want a thyroid tumor but I find interesting and beneficial not taking a stance, allowing the limbo, giving my body some time to decide, to manifest. “What are you gonna do?”, they ask, as if “doing” could determine my cells, as if menacing or flattering them I’d have the chance to influence them and make them decide, a.s.a.p, if they’re good or bad. I am developing a neutral practice and vision about this concrete body circumstance. As a tennis referee, seating in his/her high chair above players and watchers, right in the middle of the tennis court, unbiased, dispassionate, watchful and aware of what is happening. I want to see how long I can stay not entering this dual game of positive and negative and its clean and excluding outlines, its straight path from which all clear and determined actions are born. Some irony here, sorry. 4. I’ll keep you posted.
